A Unique Cultural Fusion in Lisbon
The Associação Portuguesa de Escritores (APE) and Cinemateca Portuguesa have teamed up to present the 'Intermedialidades' cycle, blending cinema and literature in a captivating series of events. Kicking off on September 5, 2025, at 6:00 PM, this initiative starts with the screening of 'O Primo Basílio', a film adaptation of Eça de Queirós's work by director António Lopes Ribeiro, held in the Luís de Pina room.
Following the film, at 8:30 PM, attendees can indulge in a Queirosian-themed dinner at the cinemateca's restaurant. The menu is inspired by the famous feast described in Eça de Queirós's novel 'A Cidade e as Serras', featuring dishes like Gratinado de Cogumelos, Canja de Galinha à Jacinto, Arroz Malandrinho de favas, Frango Alourado à moda de Tormes, and Leite Creme Queimado.
The evening concludes with a debate on Eça de Queirós's life and works, led by ambassador António Monteiro and gastronome Virgilio Nogueiro Gomes, accompanied by an enacted reading by actor Rui Mendes. This event aims to explore the intersection of literature and cinema, highlighting how these arts complement each other.
Luís Machado, a writer and member of APE's board, emphasized that the cycle focuses on two major Portuguese authors: Camilo Castelo Branco, commemorating his bicentennial birth, and Eça de Queirós, marking 125 years since his death. The partnership with Cinemateca, ongoing since 2019, may continue with future editions, potentially twice a year, to celebrate other literary anniversaries.
Interested participants should contact the Associação Portuguesa de Escritores for registrations. The cycle continues on September 22 at 5:30 PM with the film 'O Dia do Desespero' by Manoel de Oliveira, presented by José Manuel Mendes at the Biblioteca Palácio Galveias, exploring the final days of Camilo Castelo Branco.
