When the President of the Portuguese Republic publicly labeled the President of the United States as a 'Russian asset', two things happened simultaneously: a tremendous diplomatic irresponsibility and a huge confession of impotence.

Regarding the diplomatic irresponsibility, everyone has already said what needed to be said—using a phrase typical of the Cold War era to assert that Donald Trump is 'objectively' working for Putin is so contrary to the interests of Portugal and the European Union that it's impossible to find even the slightest trace of logic in such a statement. What Marcelo said at the PSD's Summer University—where, by the way, he shouldn't have even attended—was simply absurd and unwise.
