Tuition Fee Adjustments and Social Action Reinforcement
The Portuguese government has announced an update to tuition fees for bachelor's degrees, with an annual increase of €13, raising the maximum from €697 to approximately €710 per year. This adjustment is based on the current year's inflation rate, ensuring that fees keep pace with economic changes.
In a move to grant more autonomy to universities, tuition fees for master's degrees will also be unfrozen, allowing institutions greater flexibility in setting their own rates. These changes are scheduled to take effect in the 2026/2027 academic year, not impacting the upcoming school term starting in a few weeks.
Enhanced Social Action Funding
Significantly, there will be a substantial reinforcement in social action funding for higher education. By increasing the allocation of tax revenues dedicated to this support by 43%, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation, led by Minister Fernando Alexandre, has secured a boost in funding from the current €70 million to €100 million. This enhancement aims to provide better financial aid and resources for students in need, promoting greater accessibility and equity in education.
Minister Alexandre emphasized the importance of this increase during the announcement on Tuesday, highlighting it as a key step towards strengthening the social safety net within the higher education system.
