Cumplicidades Festival: A Celebration of Dance
The Cumplicidades - International Contemporary Dance Festival is back in Lisbon, running from May 10 to June 2, featuring over twenty performances in a daring edition that celebrates the hidden aspects of artistic creation.
Among the two dozen shows, there will be twelve premieres, eight of which are absolute firsts. This information comes from Eira, the organization founded in 1993 by choreographer Francisco Camacho, who launched the festival in 2015 as its "year zero".
Curatorship and Diverse Programming
The choreographers Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz have been invited to curate the programming, which includes both resident Portuguese artists and international performances. The festival also features creation labs, classes, audioguides, public performances, and discussions.
According to the curators, this edition showcases formats that display varying degrees of artistic creation in dance, where the performance is just one of its many expressions. They suggest that "Gradações" (Gradations) could be the subtitle for this year's festival.
Opening Performances and Collaborations
The festival opens with seven short performances, the result of a research lab that brings together seven artists and five neuroscientists in a unique collaboration with the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT) and the Champalimaud Foundation. This collaboration focuses on works by Ana Léon, Jeff Wall, and Rui Moreira currently on display at the museum.
Diverse Venues
Dance enthusiasts can enjoy the programming in various venues, including Pavilhão Branco, Biblioteca de Marvila, Teatro Taborda, Rua das Gaivotas 6, Centro de Interpretação de Monsanto, Jardim da Estrela, Teatro do Bairro Alto (TBA), and Rossio Train Station.
Highlights include the absolute premiere of “CatGut Jim” by Connor Scott at the Black Box of the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), the national premiere of “Melodrama Senza Te” by Bruno Brandolino at TBA, and performances such as “Mandíbula” by Josefa Pereira and “Fuck me Blind” by Italian choreographer Matteo Sedda, both at the CCB.
Inclusive Initiatives and International Projection
This year's Cumplicidades Festival also includes the Laboratório Dança Sem Idade, featuring artists over 45 years old, guided by Francisco Camacho and Diego Lasio. The festival invites international programmers to attend, creating opportunities for global exposure, with attendees from festivals like Laiks Dejot in Latvia, Dança em Trânsito in Brazil, and Mostra Internacional de Teatro de Ribadavia in Galicia, Spain.
Artistic Dialogues and Future Imaginations
The festival continues its dialogue with visual arts through two performances: “Fazer Ideia” by Inês Melo Campos in relation to a piece by visual artist Fernanda Fragateiro at the CCB, and another by Andresa Soares at Pavilhão Branco, engaging with an exhibition by Francisco Vidal.
Moreover, the festival will host an event titled “Imagining Futures” at the Champalimaud Foundation, where artists and scientists will share innovative projects in a series of talks and performances that blend reality and fiction.
Free Dance Classes
Additionally, the "Dance Passport" initiative runs from May 5 to 9, offering free dance classes at various locations throughout Greater Lisbon, leading up to the festival's official start.
