Spain's Minister of Ecological Transition Responds to Blackout Blame
Sara Aagesen, the Spanish Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, labeled the blame placed on renewable energy for last week's blackout in Portugal and Spain as "irresponsible and simplistic." In an interview with El País, she acknowledged that it will take many days to pinpoint the cause of the blackout, and she did not rule out any potential factors, including a cyberattack.
Aagesen emphasized that the government will take action as soon as they have certainty about the cause. She also dismissed the notion of linking the blackout to the scheduled closure of nuclear power plants in Spain, which was agreed upon by energy companies and the government.
"We are investigating with extreme caution and responsibility to ensure we have certainties to communicate transparently and to seek measures to prevent a recurrence of this issue," Aagesen stated.
On another note, she expressed that France must understand that interconnections should be implemented regardless of circumstances to enhance the security of the Iberian electrical grid.
The minister described the blackout as an unusual occurrence, noting that it had never happened before in Spain. She explained, "Determining the cause is challenging because, during the five seconds of fluctuations, numerous variables need to be analyzed in each millisecond. Additionally, different operators must be examined."
