Lisbon Celebrates National Professional Firefighter Day
On September 11, Lisbon will be the stage for the National Professional Firefighter Day, celebrating the dedication of firefighters across the country. This day aims to honor all professional firefighters and their respective corps, highlighting their work and contribution to protecting populations and providing care and support services. The first celebration of this day took place in 2008 in Setúbal.
The city of Lisbon will host the 17th edition of this event, promoted by the National Association of Professional Firefighters (ANBP), to pay tribute to the tireless work of all firefighters who dedicate themselves daily to protecting people, property, nature, and animals.
This year's national ceremony will take place at Praça do Império, in front of the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, at 4 PM. It will feature the presence of approximately 300 firefighters from fire departments across the country, including the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores. In formation, the firefighters will pay a heartfelt tribute to colleagues who died in the line of duty.
During the ceremony, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, will be awarded the Collar of Honor and Merit, the highest decoration given by the ANBP, in recognition of his commitment to valuing firefighters, strengthening civil protection, and working for the safety of Lisbon's citizens.
As part of the celebrations, medals will also be awarded to firefighters who have distinguished themselves through their professionalism, courage, and dedication to service. These decorations aim to praise the contribution of these professionals to population protection and the dignification of the firefighters' mission in Portugal.
The National Professional Firefighter Day, established by the ANBP in 2008, is associated with the symbolism of September 11. This historical milestone evokes the fateful day of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001, where hundreds of firefighters lost their lives in rescue operations.
