Lisbon's political scene is buzzing as seven candidates have already been announced for the upcoming local elections, with the possibility of new political alliances still in the air. The city, currently led by Carlos Moedas since 2021 without an absolute majority, is at the center of intense political negotiations.
Carlos Moedas, a 54-year-old civil engineer and former European Commissioner, has expressed his desire to run for a second term, highlighting his commitment to addressing the city's challenges. Meanwhile, the CDU has put forward João Ferreira, a 46-year-old biologist and former MEP, as their candidate, emphasizing the need for affordable housing and healthcare.
New entries and familiar faces include Ossanda Líber from the Nova Direita party, focusing on housing and security, and Alexandra Leitão from the PS, promising decisive leadership. The BE's candidate, actress Carolina Serrão, aims to tackle inequality, while the far-right Ergue-te party's José Pinto Coelho campaigns against multiculturalism.
The Chega party has nominated Bruno Mascarenhas, advocating for a functional city and fighting corruption. With Lisbon's population at 575,739 in 2024, the elections promise to be a pivotal moment for the city's future.
Current municipal dynamics show a fragmented assembly, with the Novos Tempos coalition leading but without a majority, setting the stage for a highly competitive election.
