The Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation (MECI) has introduced a new proposal for the Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES), marking significant changes from the current legal framework and the draft law submitted to the Assembly of the Republic in February. This proposal, which was not discussed due to the early termination of the legislative session, includes the classification of new institutions as either universities or polytechnic universities. EU agencies may now also be involved in the accreditation process, and secondary school teachers could receive training from polytechnic institutions.
Meetings with stakeholders are set to begin next week, highlighting the government's commitment to modernizing and enhancing the quality of higher education in Portugal. The proposal aims to address various aspects of higher education, from institutional classification to teacher training, ensuring a more flexible and inclusive system.
