Two PSP officers from the Rato police station in Lisbon, aged 25 and 26, are under fire for allegedly committing brutal attacks on detainees, including a case involving sexual abuse with a baton. The hierarchy reported them to the DIAP of the Public Prosecutor's Office about nine months ago, after becoming aware of the victims' complaints, which included videos of several incidents. Following their interrogation last Friday at the Justice Campus, both were placed in preventive detention. They are indicted for torture, qualified physical offenses, falsifications, and embezzlement. The General Inspectorate of Internal Administration has already launched an investigation.
At least 10 cases of violence have been identified. The suspects, both serving at the Rato police station, typically detained individuals, often drug addicts, for minor offenses like theft or small-scale trafficking, bringing them to the police facilities. The excessive violence occurred during the identification phase. There is both testimonial and video evidence of brutal beatings. In one particularly harrowing incident, filmed on a mobile phone, a police baton was used in sexual abuse against a detainee. Existing evidence was bolstered after searches were conducted at their workplaces and residences last Thursday.
One of the detained officers is a member of the Independent Union of PSP Agents (SIAP). "He is being defended by our lawyer," revealed Carlos Torres, president of SIAP. Meanwhile, the national director of the PSP, Luís Carrilho, expressed his disappointment over the arrests but assured the public that they can continue to trust the PSP.
