The Republican National Guard (GNR) has seized 18 tourist animation vehicles, commonly known as tuk-tuks, in Lisbon and Sintra. These vehicles were being operated using falsified documents and fake license plates.
Following a year-long investigation into document forgery and the illegal registration of vehicles used in tourist activities, GNR officers conducted police operations that led to the execution of two search warrants in warehouses where the vehicles were stored. A total of 18 vehicles were seized, and the case has been forwarded to the Sintra Judicial Court.
Tuk-tuks, which are highly popular in Asian countries, have seen a significant increase in Portuguese cities like Lisbon and Porto, becoming a favorite among tourists. Since April of this year, the Lisbon City Council has empowered EMEL to oversee and impose fines for traffic violations involving tuk-tuks, coinciding with the implementation of various circulation restrictions for these tourist vehicles in the capital.
The circulation of tuk-tuks is now prohibited in 337 streets across seven parishes, including Avenidas Novas, Arroios, Penha de França, São Vicente, Santo António, Misericórdia, and Santa Maria Maior.
