The Minister of Internal Affairs (MAI) emphasized the importance of not generalizing the actions of one individual to the entire police force, following the arrest of a PSP officer linked to a neo-Nazi group. The officer, suspected of leading the Lusitanian Armillary Movement (MAL), is accused of terrorist acts with neo-Nazi connotations. This case has sparked outrage, especially after it was revealed that the officer appeared on a替补 list for the 2021 local elections by the far-right party Ergue-te.
At a seminar on "Migration and Return: New Directions for Europe," Maria Lúcia Amaral stated that such crimes are "unacceptable in a country like Portugal." She stressed the need to honor the institutions and the individuals who work within them daily. This was her first public address as the head of the Internal Administration.
PSP's national director, Luís Carrilho, also spoke at the event, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations and the importance of letting justice take its course. He mentioned that over 14 years, PSP has conducted 60 internal inquiries related to racism and xenophobia, with 44 archived, five punished, and the rest under review.
The Judicial Police recently arrested six suspects connected to the Lusitanian Armillary Movement, with four placed in preventive detention. Among them was the PSP officer, identified as one of the movement's founders in 2018. The suspects face charges related to terrorist groups and possession of prohibited weapons.
The Judicial Police hinted at the involvement of more security force members in the neo-Nazi militia, with reports suggesting at least three are under scrutiny.
