A tragic discovery was made early this Tuesday morning in Porto, as the body of a woman, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old, was found floating in the Douro River near the D. Maria Pia bridge in the Bonfim area. The circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown.
The alarm was raised around 6:30 AM by a local who spotted the body, prompting an immediate response from the Maritime Authority, Police Maritime, and firefighters from Sapadores and Portuenses. The victim was later transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine for further examination.
In a statement released this morning, the Maritime Authority confirmed that Judicial Police elements were activated following the alert at 6:37 AM, reporting a body on the right bank of the bridge. The body was retrieved from the water by divers from the Porto Sapadores Bombeiros Regiment, and the death verification was carried out by a doctor from the VMER of Santo António Hospital, which was also mobilized.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office was activated to assist in the situation. After investigations by the Judicial Police and authorization from the Public Ministry, the victim was transported to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Porto. The Douro Local Command of the Maritime Police has taken charge of the occurrence.
