More than 140 municipalities across Portugal's interior and the Algarve region are under maximum fire risk this Monday, as reported by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
High-Risk Areas
The IPMA has placed nearly the entire Alentejo region and over 20 municipalities in the districts of Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, and Faro at elevated risk. All municipalities in the districts of Bragança, Guarda, and Viseu, along with most in Vila Real and Castelo Branco, are under the highest alert.
Weather Conditions
The IPMA forecasts continued hot weather and mostly clear skies for Monday, with some cloudiness in the western Algarve. Winds are expected to be generally weak but may become moderate to strong in the Algarve temporarily.
Temperature Variations
Temperatures are predicted to drop slightly in the south, with highs ranging from 27°C in Sagres to 40°C in Évora. Overnight lows will vary between 17°C in Bragança and 24°C in Portalegre.
National Alert
Portugal's mainland has been on alert since Sunday, extending through Thursday, due to the high fire risk, as announced by the Minister of Internal Administration.
The fire risk scale used by IPMA includes five levels, from reduced to maximum, with the latter indicating conditions like extreme heat and low humidity that significantly increase the danger of fire ignition and spread.
