Over 150 municipalities in mainland Portugal are under maximum fire risk, with the IPMA predicting continued hot weather. By noon, 1,528 personnel were battling fires across the country, supported by 491 vehicles and 9 aircraft, according to Civil Protection data.
The Iberian Peninsula and other European regions face extreme fire conditions over the next seven days, as highlighted by the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Since the start of the year, 1,478 fires have been detected in the EU, a significant increase from the same period in 2024.
In a concerning development, the PJ arrested a 52-year-old man suspected of arson in Amares. The fire, detected early by a local resident, threatened nearby homes and vegetation. The suspect is set to face interrogation and possible coercive measures.
A press conference was scheduled to update on the Sirarelhos fire in Vila Real, led by regional deputy commander José Guilherme. Meanwhile, 150 inland and two Algarve municipalities are under maximum fire risk, with Bragança, Guarda, and Viseu districts particularly affected.
A repeat arsonist was detained in Águeda, suspected of starting a forest fire on Sunday. The individual, with prior convictions for similar crimes, had served two prison sentences.
By Monday evening, 75 incidents involved 1,349 responders, with Vila Real's mayor highlighting firefighter fatigue and calling for additional resources.
