A horrifying crime shook Lisbon last week, as a man was decapitated in the city's downtown area. The Ministry of Public (MP) has disclosed chilling details about the murder, revealing that the suspect placed the victim's head in a backpack after the decapitation and dragged the body to a debris-filled area. Later, he returned home, where he stored the victim's head in the freezer.
The Gruesome Details
The autopsy indicated that the victim attempted to defend himself during the attack but ultimately lost strength and fell to the ground. The MP's report suggests that the suspect, a foreign national, met the victim on the night of July 29, 2025, leading to an altercation in Páteo Salema under unclear circumstances.
The suspect stabbed the victim in the neck multiple times, with the exact number of blows remaining undetermined. Despite the victim's efforts to defend himself, the attack culminated in the severance of the victim's head from his body.
The Aftermath
After the decapitation, the suspect concealed the head in his backpack and hid the body among debris to avoid detection. He then took the head home and stored it in his freezer. The following day, at around 3:30 PM, he surrendered the head at Hospital São José, where he was subsequently arrested by the PSP.
The investigation, led by the Lisbon DIAP, is now under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Police, with the case shrouded in judicial secrecy. The suspect, a 29-year-old man, was subjected to his first judicial interrogation on Saturday, resulting in the most severe measure of coercion: preventive detention. He refused to make any statements in court.
The MP has charged the suspect with qualified homicide and desecration of a corpse, marking a grim chapter in Lisbon's recent history.
