Police Suspect Large-Scale Hash Trafficking Under Medicinal Cannabis Cover
The Judicial Police (PJ) are conducting dozens of searches and arrests this morning related to international drug trafficking, currently operating under the guise of a legal medicinal cannabis business.
This investigation traces back to Terra Verde, a company owned by Ângelo Correia, which in 2014 became the first in Portugal to receive authorization for cultivating cannabis exclusively for medicinal purposes. This license positioned Portugal as a leading global exporter of cannabis.
However, the Public Ministry and the National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking (UNCTE) of the PJ now believe the operation has been corrupted. Under the facade of medicinal use, within a sector governed by strict export and sales regulations, there are suspicions of large-scale hash trafficking aimed at the illegal market rather than medicinal purposes.
