Filipe Sousa, a 60-year-old current mayor of Santa Cruz in Madeira, has been elected by Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) to represent the Madeira constituency in the Assembleia da República. This marks a historic achievement as it's the first time a regional profile party, based in an autonomous region, secures a seat in the national parliament.
Sousa, who has a diverse background including being a former PS deputy, unionist, and musician, co-founded JPP with his brother, Élvio. In the aftermath of the election results, Sousa pledged to be the 'voice of the islands' and expressed openness to collaborate with both the left and right political spectrums.
This election not only highlights Sousa's personal political journey but also signifies a potential shift in Portugal's political landscape, emphasizing the growing influence of regional parties in national politics.
