Efacec has been selected for the development and supply of turnkey solutions in the heavy metro sector, as part of the extension of Lisbon Metro's Red Line between São Sebastião and Alcântara.
This contract, the largest for Efacec in the railway and metro sector in Portugal, includes the design and construction of traction power systems, low voltage, ventilation, pumping, SSIT, and CCTV systems. This demonstrates the national market's trust in the quality of engineering from the Portuguese company.
The ACE consortium, formed by Mota-Engil and Spie Batignolles, responsible for the general construction of the Red Line extension, chose Efacec for this significant subcontract. This decision reinforces Efacec's involvement in the expansion of the Lisbon Metro, where its products and solutions are already widely used across various technological areas.
Delays in the line extension works
Efacec is currently a leading international player in the railway and metro sector, offering a comprehensive range of traction and power systems, signaling and safety, telematics and telecommunications, and command and control systems for railways, road transport, metro, and light metro.
The extension of the Lisbon Metro's Red Line to Alcântara is currently underway but faces significant delays. Initially, the new Alcântara station and the three intermediate stations (Campolide/Amoreiras, Campo de Ourique, and Infante Santo) were expected to be completed by December 31, 2026, as stipulated in the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
However, according to the National PRR Monitoring Commission, this deadline cannot be met due to various reasons, including legal challenges and delays in the start of the works, which only began in May 2024.
