President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa attended the wake of a firefighter from Covilhã who died in a tragic accident while on duty. The President emphasized that he "respected the rules" by not marking his presence on the ground politically and assured that he would not miss funerals of firefighters or victims.
"I have never missed and will never miss the funerals of firefighters or victims, as long as I am President and after I cease to be President," the head of state declared to CMTV before leaving the Covilhã fire station where the wake was held.
The President shared that he knew the deceased firefighter personally, recalling him as "exceptional as a firefighter and as a community servant." He praised the firefighter's dedication, stating, "They deserve everything."
Following the news of the firefighter's death, the President sent condolences to the victim's family. The tragic incident occurred when the firefighting vehicle they were in skidded in Aldeia de São Francisco de Assis, Covilhã. The firefighters were responding to a fire outbreak in Quinta do Campo, Fundão.
This marks the first firefighter death in the 2025 wildfires, with another casualty reported in Vila Franca do Deão, where a former mayor and candidate for local elections died while fighting the flames.
