In a dramatic turn of events, Rui Rocha, the leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL), was targeted by activists during a rally in Lisbon. Two young protesters stormed the stage, one holding a sign that read 'for our species not to go extinct, end fossil fuels by 2030'. The incident escalated when one of the activists sprayed green paint on Rocha's face and back.
Despite the interruption, Rocha remained composed, removing his blazer and continuing his speech with his face covered in green paint. He emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, stating, "This is the house of freedom, where everyone has the right to speak, but we also have the right to speak and to make our choices."
The protest occurred as Rocha was sharing his life story, highlighting his career built on "competence, rigor, and integrity". He later remarked, "And these who appeared here are not even the toughest, I've faced many more adversities in my life that I've overcome," earning applause from the IL members present.
The activists were swiftly removed from the stage by IL staff. The incident has sparked discussions on the limits of protest and freedom of expression in political events.
