Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government of Madeira, expressed his condolences to the family of Father Martins Júnior, who passed away last Thursday. Albuquerque chose not to elaborate further on the matter during a visit to a company in Câmara de Lobos.
Father Martins Júnior, a prominent figure in Madeira's recent history, was suspended 'a divinis' for 42 years before his suspension was revoked in 2019. He passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of defending freedom, democracy, and civic participation.
A Life of Service and Controversy
Born in 1938 and ordained in 1962, Martins Júnior was known for his unwavering commitment to the underprivileged and his active role in regional politics. Despite his suspension, he continued to serve his parish, earning the respect and support of the local community.
Tributes Pour In
- Ireneu Barreto, the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, praised Martins Júnior as an "unavoidable figure in Madeira's history".
- Rubina Leal, President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, highlighted his "meritorious journey" and dedication to Machico and Ribeira Seca.
- Political parties, including the JPP and PS/Madeira, expressed deep sorrow, remembering him as a "man of causes" and a symbol of resilience.
Martins Júnior's suspension was lifted by Bishop Nuno Brás in 2019, a decision welcomed by many. He served as the parish administrator of Ribeira Seca until early 2023, when a new parish priest took over.
His last mass was celebrated in February 2023, where he reflected on his service to "the people of God" rather than the Catholic Church institution.
