Lisbon is set to host EuroPride, the largest LGBTI+ event in Europe, starting this Saturday. With an expected turnout of 200,000 participants, 60% of whom are coming from abroad, the event promises to be a vibrant celebration of diversity and inclusion. However, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued a public health advisory ahead of the festivities, which run until June 22.
Key health recommendations include ensuring vaccinations are up to date, particularly for monkeypox, which continues to circulate widely among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Europe. Hepatitis is another concern highlighted by the authorities.
The ECDC also emphasizes the importance of safe sex practices, recommending the use of condoms and suggesting changes between anal and oral sex. The advisory includes specific guidance for various sexual practices to minimize health risks. Additionally, participants engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners are strongly advised to get tested for sexually transmitted infections, regardless of symptoms.
Beyond sexual health, the advisory covers general safety tips for dealing with heat, mosquitoes, and large crowds. EuroPride's program is packed with concerts, performances, workshops, and art exhibitions, culminating in the iconic gay parade next Saturday.
