A startling revelation by the Housing and Urban Rehabilitation Institute (IHRU) has uncovered that 250,000 homes in Portugal are ready to live in but remain outside the sales or rental market. These properties are in good condition, yet they're not being utilized to alleviate the country's housing crisis.
Lisbon leads the areas with the highest number of vacant homes, highlighting a significant mismatch in the real estate market where demand far exceeds supply. Interestingly, 126,584 of these homes require some repairs, making them temporarily unavailable for habitation.
This situation raises questions about the efficiency of Portugal's housing policies and the potential solutions that could be implemented to bring these properties back into the market, providing much-needed relief to the housing shortage.
