Suspect Accused of Ten Thefts on Buses and Trams
A 71-year-old man has been placed in preventive detention for allegedly committing ten thefts on buses and trams operated by Carris, Lisbon's public transport company. The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP (Cometlis) revealed this information on Monday.
Known to Authorities with Previous Convictions
According to a statement from Cometlis, the suspect was already known to the authorities. He had previously served a suspended sentence for similar crimes in 2020 and had been detained in Porto for thefts targeting tourists.
Exploiting Age and Dual Nationality
The PSP noted in their statement that the detained individual used his advanced age and dual nationality (Brazilian and Italian) to blend in with victims and travel between European countries to commit thefts. He is also prohibited from entering France due to previous thefts committed there.
Arrest on Tram 15 in Lisbon
The man was ultimately arrested on September 12 on Tram 15 in Lisbon after stealing a wallet from a Scottish tourist. The wallet was later recovered and returned to its owner, as confirmed by the PSP.
Seizure of Stolen Goods and Money
Following a search of the pension room where he resided, authorities seized 1,490 euros, two stolen mobile phones (which were returned to their owners), and gold items valued at 4,500 euros. These items were reportedly purchased using stolen bank cards.
Judicial Decision
The Criminal Investigation Judge in Lisbon, before whom the suspect was presented for his first interrogation, ordered that he await trial in preventive detention.
