Ancient Discovery at the Church of Portimão
A set of human remains was uncovered in the courtyard of the Igreja Matriz de Portimão while repairs were underway, according to a source from the Portimão City Council. This 16th-century church, built in the highest part of the city within the old city walls, has revealed secrets of its past.
The discovery was made following the collapse of a wall during recent bad weather that struck the Algarve. As work commenced to restore the wall, part of the bones was exposed, prompting the local authorities to call in an archaeological team to examine the findings.
According to the municipal source, it is common to find bones during construction near churches, as these sites were historically used as cemeteries. Given that these remains were found in the courtyard, experts are considering the possibility of an ancient cemetery existing at the site.
The preliminary investigations indicate the presence of 12 bodies, with archaeologists suggesting that more may be discovered as work continues. The Igreja Matriz de Portimão is not only a place of worship but a historical treasure, showcasing a blend of Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, and Manueline styles due to various reconstruction phases throughout its history.
Inside, the church boasts a Late Gothic portal inspired by the Monastery of Batalha, showcasing the architectural richness of the period. The municipality highlights the church's artistic and historical significance on its official website, emphasizing its role in the community's heritage.
