Discovery of Human Remains at Igreja Matriz de Portimão
A set of human remains was uncovered in the courtyard of the Igreja Matriz de Portimão during renovation works, according to a source from the Portimão City Council. This significant discovery occurred following the collapse of a church wall during one of the recent storms that affected the Algarve region.
The renovation efforts aimed at restoring the wall inadvertently revealed part of the remains, prompting the city council to call in an archaeological team to investigate the findings. The municipal source noted that it is not uncommon to find human remains near churches, as these locations were historically used as cemeteries.
Given that these remains were found in the courtyard, experts are considering the possibility of an ancient cemetery at the site. Archaeologists are currently working to understand the context of the burials. Preliminary investigations indicate the presence of 12 bodies, although the team does not rule out the discovery of additional remains in the future.
The Igreja Matriz de Portimão dates back to the 15th century and is situated in the highest area of the city, within the old city walls. Inside, it features a late Gothic portal inspired by the grand Monastery of Batalha, showcasing various architectural styles including Baroque, Rococo, and Manueline, a result of different phases of reconstruction and artistic enhancement of this religious landmark.
