GLORIA MUNDI Exhibition
On May 8, 2025, at 6:30 PM, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Lisbon will inaugurate the GLORIA MUNDI exhibition featuring the talented artist Obie Platon. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the peaks and depths of modern life, showcasing a series of works in various dimensions.
Obie Platon, born in 1987, resides and works in Bucharest but actively participates in exhibitions across Europe and Asia. He is renowned for his bold approaches to both the scale and themes of his artworks, seamlessly transitioning from large-scale murals to canvas paintings. As a pioneer of urban art in Romania since the late 1990s, Platon has developed a unique artistic language rooted in Platonic philosophy, revealing aspects of life often overlooked by society. His creations blend elements of popular imagery and contemporary absurdity.
Studying at the Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest significantly influenced his complex murals, experimental canvases, conceptual sculptures, and interactive installations, allowing him to engage meaningfully with contemporary society. Platon is also the founder and president of URBANART, the first association for urban art and culture in Romania, and has supported contemporary artists through various cultural and social regeneration projects across urban areas.
In recent years, Platon has participated in numerous international exhibitions and festivals, contributing to mural art projects in cities like Hamburg, Shanghai, Beijing, Budapest, and many more. His personal works have been auctioned at Artmark and featured on Artnet. His architectural studies are evident in both his canvases and murals, where he often anchors his art in basic architectural structures, layering them with the surrounding reality.
Platon's iconic visual landmarks are deconstructed, reshaping the imagery to reveal what remains of the past and how it has transformed. His works, characterized by surreal and subversive themes, often contain cultural, literary, and philosophical references. He predominantly uses oil paints on canvas, drawing inspiration from his travels across Europe and Asia. A connection forms between the walls he claims and the canvases he works on, showcasing his approach to both mediums.
Visually overwhelming, Obie Platon's art is fundamentally iconoclastic, challenging traditional perspectives with an ironic and critical lens, while maintaining a profound respect for history that informs the present.
