The traditional procession in honor of Nossa Senhora da Luz wound through the streets of Carnide this Sunday, marking the grand finale of festivities that have enlivened the area throughout September.
Thousands of people participated in this revered event. The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Luz in Carnide dates back to the 15th century, rooted in a legend where a devotee named Pero Martins, guided by a mysterious light, discovered an image of the Virgin Mary. This miraculous event led to the construction of a hermitage dedicated to Santa Maria da Luz. Since then, the annual procession has become one of Lisbon's oldest religious traditions.
The celebrations, known as the Feira da Luz, span the entire month of September, featuring a variety of cultural and religious activities. Recognized as one of Portugal's most historic fairs, it culminates on the last Sunday of September with the solemn procession taking to the streets to close the festivities.
