Vila Real de Santo António witnessed the most significant rise in votes for Chega in the Algarve region during the recent legislative elections, overtaking the PS (Socialist Party) as the most voted force.
In a municipality where the Socialists had won in 2024 with 30.75% of the votes, Chega secured 38.57% this time, leaving the PS with 22.74%. The AD coalition (PSD/CDS-PP) maintained its third position with 20.52%, showing an improvement from the 17.53% it garnered last year.
Chega gained approximately 1,100 more votes than in 2024, drawing support primarily from left-wing parties. The CDU dropped from 6.02% to 4.56%, and the BE fell from the fifth to the seventh position, with its votes decreasing from 5.54% to 2.29%. The IL and Livre were among the few parties that bucked the downward trend in this political space.
Álvaro Araújo, the PS mayor of Vila Real de Santo António, expressed serenity and respect for the electoral outcome, acknowledging a widespread dissatisfaction with traditionally popular parties. He highlighted the need for a deep reflection on addressing the concrete concerns of the populace, such as the new Algarve Hospital, EN125 road, and water management.
David Silva, PSD's local leader, noted the consistent growth of his party in legislative elections since 2019, despite Chega's rise. He attributed Chega's success to the lack of solutions to regional issues, fostering a sense of betrayal and revolt among the population.
The article underscores a growing distrust towards traditional parties, with Chega capitalizing on public frustration and discontent to position itself as an alternative to the system.
