Access to the port of Leixões from the A28 highway, which was closed as a precaution due to the spillage of drums containing hydrochloric acid, has now been reopened, according to Civil Protection authorities this Wednesday.
The spill occurred when thousand-liter drums of the chemical fell from a heavy vehicle, leading to the immediate response from emergency services. The incident was reported at 23:46 on Tuesday night, prompting the establishment of a 150-meter safety perimeter due to the release of gases and initial uncertainty about the drums' contents.
By 08:30 the following morning, the situation was under control with the spill contained and the transfer of the hazardous material completed. Authorities awaited the arrival of a sand truck to cover the spilled liquid, marking the final step in the cleanup process.
Emergency teams on site included 21 operatives and eight vehicles from the Leixões volunteer firefighters, GNR, PSP, and a hazardous materials team from the Porto Fire Department.
