José Luís Carneiro has announced his readiness to "serve the Socialist Party (PS) and Portugal," signaling his intention to run for the leadership of the socialists once more. The former minister believes the PS needs "a deep reflection" to usher in a new era, contributing to political stability while ruling out a central bloc scenario. Senior party figures like João Soares and Augusto Santos Silva have already thrown their support behind him.
In a CNN interview, Carneiro emphasized the PS's role in ensuring the viability of the new AD government, stating, "The PS must be clear in guaranteeing the government's viability. That's what citizens ask of us." However, he dismissed the idea of a "central bloc," arguing it would be unnecessary and detrimental.
Carneiro's vision includes fostering political work within the parliamentary framework to address reformist impulses, highlighting the importance of economic growth, dignified work, poverty reduction, and strengthening public services like the NHS and public schools. He also stressed the need for the PS to defend pluralism and peaceful coexistence among all, regardless of their convictions.
Augusto Santos Silva and João Soares have publicly endorsed Carneiro, with Santos Silva warning against a weak and convulsed PS, which would only benefit the far-right. Meanwhile, the PS is set to discuss the electoral calendar and leadership transition in a National Commission meeting, with Carlos César temporarily taking the helm following Pedro Nuno Santos's resignation.
The debate over the timing of internal elections continues, with some advocating for leadership selection after the upcoming local elections to focus on recovery and unity. Francisco Assis and Daniel Adrião are among those suggesting the PS should prioritize the local elections before embarking on internal leadership contests.
