Two GNR officers, aged 23 and 25, were detained by their colleagues from the Criminal Investigation Unit (NIC) in Faro this Wednesday, in the municipality of Tavira, for the alleged practice of several crimes, the Guard announced in a statement. They are suspected of extorting money from migrants and minorities.
According to sources, the officers allegedly used threats and physical violence to force migrants to hand over cash, under the pretext of fines for supposed irregularities. They then falsified reports to cover up their crimes.
Charges and Investigation
The officers are currently indicted for crimes including concussion, theft, document forgery, and physical offenses. The investigation, which lasted six months, was conducted in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Offices of Faro and Tavira. Despite none of the victims filing complaints, the GNR investigators, through specialized surveillance teams and other evidence-gathering methods, managed to gather substantial evidence leading to the arrests.
The GNR has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards any acts that violate police ethics or institutional values, emphasizing its commitment to acting with determination, rigor, and transparency, even when its own members are involved.
