Queen Letizia has been enjoying a retreat in Portugal, residing in a private castle owned by millionaire Vasco Pereira Coutinho in Ferragudo, Lagoa, Algarve.
A Historic Fortress
The castle, known as Castelo de São João do Arade, has a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Originally constructed by D. João II, this fortification was designed to protect the Arade River estuary from Spanish attacks and regulate maritime traffic. Over the centuries, it transitioned from a military monument to a holiday residence, undergoing several renovations.
Architectural Evolution
Initially, it began as a watchtower during the Philip Dynasty, with its current structure emerging post 1640, following the restoration of independence from Spanish rule.
Current Ownership
Today, it belongs to Vasco Pereira Coutinho, a wealthy businessman who also owns a palatial estate in Lisbon and the Quinta Mata Mouros in Silves. The Spanish royal family has maintained a longstanding friendship with Coutinho, having previously visited the castle in 2010. Interestingly, this location was also chosen by former Prime Minister Durão Barroso for his wedding in 2023.
A Royal Retreat
Currently, Queen Letizia is reportedly distanced from Felipe VI and the Zarzuela Palace, seeking refuge in Portugal whenever her schedule allows, aiming to remain under the radar according to royal experts.
