Two GNR military personnel were arrested this Wednesday on suspicion of assault and extortion against immigrants living in Tavira, Algarve.
According to the GNR spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Canatário, the victims are "citizens of Hindustani origin, residents and established in the municipality of Tavira". At this stage of the investigation, it is not yet possible to determine the exact number of victims.
The official added that the two military personnel "have been stationed in Tavira for about two years" and that "their actions were mainly restricted to that municipality".
As the JN found out, the guards acted in various ways, always with the aim of stealing money from immigrants. During inspection operations, for example, they misled citizens, making them believe they had to pay a fine in cash. Due to ignorance of legal procedures, the victims ended up doing so. "We suspect that there were cases where the military assaulted the victims", added the lieutenant colonel.
