Portugal is bracing for a week of sunshine and soaring temperatures, with the Alentejo and Algarve regions expected to reach highs of 32°C. This comes after weeks of unstable weather across the country.
Contrasting Weather Patterns Across Europe
While Southern Europe, including Portugal, enjoys warm and stable weather, Northern and Central Europe are experiencing a polar air invasion, bringing significantly colder temperatures than usual for this time of year. The Mediterranean is facing severe weather conditions, with heavy rainfall expected in areas like Southern France, Northern Italy, and the Balkans, where some regions could see up to 300-500 mm of rain.
Temperatures are set to rise in the south of the country this Wednesday.
Portugal's Weather Outlook
The South of Portugal, particularly Beja, Évora, and Faro, will be the hottest areas, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. The weather is expected to remain stable, dry, and sunny throughout the week, with clear skies dominating the forecast. The Algarve's Sotavento region will see temperatures staying above 30°C, accompanied by moderate to strong winds in the afternoon.
By the weekend, temperatures could climb to 32°C in the Alentejo interior, making it the hottest part of the country. Meanwhile, the Azores will experience cloudy or overcast skies with possible light drizzle, and Madeira will enjoy generally clear weather with some cloudiness in northern and mountainous areas.
No Weather Warnings, But Caution Advised
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has not issued any weather warnings, but they recommend taking precautions against the high UV index, which is expected to be between 8 and 9 (very high) across most of the country. There's also a possibility of an even more intense heatwave towards the end of May, with temperatures potentially reaching 35°C in some areas.
Temperatures may hit 32°C in the Alentejo by Sunday, but no warnings are expected.
