Spinumviva and Political Instability
The latest debate kicked off with Luís Montenegro, leader of the PSD, defending himself against allegations of illegality, stating he possesses the necessary integrity for the role of Prime Minister. In contrast, Pedro Nuno Santos, Secretary-General of the PS, argued that Montenegro lacks the required credibility.
On the right, André Ventura from Chega held Montenegro accountable but noted that political instability began with the previous PS government.
Justice Reform Discussion
The second topic of the debate was Justice Reform. Ventura urged that reforms should not allow politicians to control the judiciary, while Inês Sousa Real from PAN pointed out that many parties have their own issues to address, specifically referencing the trial of Cristina Rodrigues, a Chega deputy.
Rui Rocha, a liberal, criticized other parties for failing to explain the need for elections, while Rui Tavares from Livre insisted that Spinumviva remains a potential influence, trusting the Prime Minister's assurances.
Paulo Raimundo from CDU emphasized the autonomy of justice, and Mariana Mortágua from Bloco de Esquerda warned against political interference in judicial matters, highlighting concerns over selective information leaks.
Both Pedro Nuno Santos and Luís Montenegro acknowledged the potential for a broad consensus on reforms.
Post-Election Governance Scenarios
A significant matter in these elections is the political stability expected after May 18. The President of the Republic is keen to understand the support base of each party for ensuring governance, leading to heated exchanges between PSD and PS leaders, with calls for strategic voting.
PSD, PS, IL, PAN, and Chega avoided discussing future scenarios in case of electoral defeat, while Rui Tavares from Livre planned personal reflections, and Mortágua expressed the need for better results than previously achieved.
As the debate neared its end, there was time to critique the government's crisis communication following the April 29 blackout, with Montenegro facing criticism yet expressing satisfaction with the government's handling of the situation. On the topic of a referendum on euthanasia, Montenegro indicated openness to the idea, whereas Nuno Santos opposed it.
Moderation and Coverage
The debate was moderated by journalists Natália Carvalho from Antena 1, Judith Meneses e Sousa from TSF, Susana Madureira Martins from Renascença, and Rui Pedro Antunes from Rádio Observador.
