4th Meeting of the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network in the Algarve
Portimão and São Brás de Alportel have been selected as the venues for the 4th Meeting of the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network, scheduled for May 13 and 14.
During a lunch organized by the Confederation of Tourism of Portugal (CTP), Pedro Nuno Santos, Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS) and candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming elections on May 18, emphasized the critical importance of tourism for Portugal's macroeconomic stability. He stated that tourism not only invigorates the economy but also enhances the country's territory, culture, and heritage.
Santos reiterated the Socialist Party's commitment to tourism, claiming that it was during PS governments that the sector saw the most significant growth, and he aims to continue this trend. He acknowledged the need for the state to be a partner rather than an obstacle to the private sector.
Challenges in Human Resources and Immigration
Addressing the issue of human resources, Santos pointed out that immigration is a sensitive topic in Portugal. He stressed the importance of balancing various interests and emphasized the need for collaboration to ensure that tourists spend more time in Portugal.
Railway: The Transportation of the Future
Santos highlighted that railways are not just for local commuting but also a valuable tourism asset. A well-functioning railway system can expand tourist access across the country.
On the topic of airports, he noted that there is much to be done with ANA (the airport authority) to ensure that contractual timelines are expedited to facilitate growth in air travel.
TAP's Future: Privatization with Caution
Discussing TAP, the national airline, Santos expressed pride in the airline's achievements, recognizing its significance for national development and tourism. He conveyed that many high-value tourists travel on TAP flights, which are essential for Portugal's economy.
Santos advocated for partial privatization of TAP, suggesting that while the government should retain majority control, opening capital to other aviation groups could foster beneficial synergies. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining TAP's operations from Lisbon.
Political Stability and Future Governance
Finally, Santos asserted that the PS has provided conditions for political stability over the past year. He countered concerns about potential government instability post-elections, stating that the PS would ensure governance continuity if victorious.
He concluded by reaffirming the PS's historical relationship with various business sectors in Portugal, emphasizing that a thriving private sector directly contributes to national prosperity.
