Brazilian diplomats in Portugal have been urged to remain calm as they seek clarity on the expulsion of approximately 18,000 immigrants from the country. A representative shared that they were advised to exercise caution in their statements. This follows an announcement by António Leitão Amaro, Portugal's Minister of the Presidency, indicating that notifications for expulsion would commence soon. The Brazilian diplomatic mission is actively inquiring whether any Brazilians are included in this group, but initial reports suggest that their numbers are quite small. A government source confirmed that the number of Brazilians affected is negligible.
The expulsion process will be systematic, with 4,574 immigrants set to be notified this week, each given 20 days for voluntary departure. Those who fail to comply may face forced removal. Many of these immigrants had previously been denied residency due to non-compliance with local regulations.
Detention Centers are in place for those who resist expulsion, with existing facilities at Lisbon and Porto airports. The government has also announced plans to build two new centers, costing €30 million, to accommodate this initiative. The Minister emphasized that the rules must be followed, stating that the immigrants listed have violated both Portuguese and European laws. The Brazilian community, which numbers over 550,000 in Portugal, represents the largest group of foreigners in the country.
