Jorge Carvalho, the current Regional Secretary of Education, has been confirmed as the PSD's candidate for the presidency of Funchal City Council, as announced by Miguel Albuquerque.
This decision comes after José Luís Nunes, initially chosen for the upcoming municipal battle in Funchal, stepped down citing personal reasons.
At 56, Carvalho has been a part of Miguel Albuquerque's governments since 2015, consistently holding the Education portfolio. Following Pedro Calado's move to Funchal City Council, he has coordinated the government's political action in recent years.
Known as one of the PSD leaders closest to Albuquerque, Carvalho's candidacy opens a vacancy in the Regional Government's structure.
Profile of the New Candidate
Born in Porto da Cruz, Machico, in 1968, Carvalho is married with two daughters and resides in Funchal. He holds a degree in Physical Education from the University of Madeira and a Master's in Sports Management.
Politically active from a young age, Carvalho was the first president of the Academic Association of the University of Madeira, serving from 1991 to 1995. He later became the University's Student Ombudsman (2011-2015) and president of the São Gonçalo Parish Council (2005-2007).
His professional journey spans teaching roles and positions in the Public Administration of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, including Vice-president of the Jaime Moniz Secondary School's Executive Council (1997-2001) and Regional Director of Youth (2001-2011).
Carvalho has overseen the Education portfolio in the XII (2015-2019), XIII (2019-2023), and XIV (2023-2024) Governments of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
