José Luís Nunes has declared the entire process of announcing his candidacy, presenting his list, and subsequently withdrawing from the race for the presidency of Funchal City Council (CMF) as a "matter settled".
The DIÁRIO sought to clarify several politically relevant points with the still-president of the Funchal Municipal Assembly, topics that remain unclear. Key questions included whether Nunes had communicated his final decision to the PSD president, Miguel Albuquerque, and what his reaction was; who extended the invitation for him to run as a candidate; whether he had the freedom to choose his candidates or if names were imposed on him; and, importantly, the concrete reasons behind his withdrawal.
However, José Luís Nunes declined to provide any clarifications, stating that, from his perspective, the issue is "a matter settled".
As reported in today's print edition of DIÁRIO, Albuquerque is now turning to the Government to find the next candidate for the CMF presidency. It is highly likely that the chosen one will be Jorge Carvalho.
This marks the third time the Government has been approached to find a candidate for Funchal: first in 2017, with Rubina Leal leaving the Government to run; then in 2021, with Pedro Calado doing the same.
