A 21-year-old suspect was arrested by the Lisbon Judicial Police (PJ) for brutally running over a PSP motorcycle squad agent from the capital's Traffic Division last Monday. The victim remains hospitalized.
The suspect was driving a car with three passengers, including a 16-year-old girl who had fled from an institution and has since been returned. He ignored a stop order from the PSP at the toll plaza of the 25 de Abril Bridge, heading South-North.
According to the PJ, the incident escalated into a high-speed chase with dangerous maneuvers, ending in a dead-end street in São Domingos de Benfica.
The motorcycle officer, who participated in the pursuit, ordered the driver and the three passengers to exit the vehicle. However, the 21-year-old suddenly reversed, running over the victim's chest twice.
Three of the four occupants fled in the vehicle (only the 16-year-old girl remained at the scene, in PSP custody), abandoning the car some distance away. They were arrested the following day in the Albufeira area.
The PJ took over the investigation and, after inquiries, formalized the arrest of the young man, who was preparing to leave the country via Lisbon Airport. He is being presented to court this Thursday for the application of coercive measures.
