Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a presidential candidate, emphasized the importance of the government focusing on development during his recent statements. He responded to Luís Marques Mendes, who had previously labeled Gouveia e Melo's candidacy as a "shot in the dark."
"At this moment, what I wish for is a long-term government that ensures stability, governance, and most importantly, the development of the country," Gouveia e Melo stated, addressing questions about the new government's composition.
He made these remarks briefly to journalists at the AI Hub in Lisbon, where he participated in a panel on artificial intelligence alongside former IL deputy Bernardo Blanco.
The former Chief of Staff of the Navy expressed no surprise at the government's choices, advocating for swift governance. However, he highlighted concerning data from a Nova SBE study on poverty in Portugal, revealing that about 17% of the population lives at risk of poverty.
When questioned about feeling targeted by Marques Mendes's comments regarding the ideal profile for the President of the Republic, Gouveia e Melo dismissed any indirect implications. "But if someone needs a flashlight, maybe I can provide one," he quipped, referencing Marques Mendes's "shot in the dark" analogy.
Marques Mendes had argued that the presidency "should be held by someone with more political experience," ensuring his candidacy was neither "a vote into the unknown nor a shot in the dark."
On the announcement of António José Seguro's presidential candidacy, Gouveia e Melo welcomed the addition, stating, "It's good to have another candidate bringing new ideas and discussions. Democracy thrives on the contrast of people and opinions."
