Searches for Madeleine McCann are set to continue near Praia da Luz, Portugal, marking a significant effort in the 18-year-old case. German and Portuguese investigators have until Friday to scour a 21 sq km area between the disappearance site and where the prime suspect, Christian Brückner, was staying.
Brückner, currently serving time in Germany for an unrelated rape, could be released as early as September. The 48-year-old has been identified by German police as a suspect in Madeleine's disappearance, though he denies any involvement.
Madeleine vanished in May 2007 from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve, sparking one of the most high-profile missing person cases globally. The investigation, initially led by Portuguese authorities with UK support, shifted focus in 2020 when German police named Brückner as a suspect.
A European warrant has facilitated the latest searches on private land, with diggers and specialist equipment deployed to examine scrubland and abandoned buildings. Previous searches near the Barragem do Arade reservoir in 2023 were prompted by Brückner's known presence in the area.
Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, recently commemorated the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, reaffirming their commitment to finding answers. The Find Madeleine Campaign stated they would not comment during the ongoing police investigation.
