Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas has decided not to renew the administration of Carris, the city's public transport company, following a damning report on the Gloria elevator accident that killed 16 people in September. This move comes just one day after the release of the investigative report by the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Accidents with Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF), which identified serious flaws in the acquisition, acceptance, and installation of the elevator cable by Carris.
Key Findings from the Report
The GPIAAF report highlights multiple critical failures in the processes managed by Carris, pointing directly to issues that led to the tragic incident. In response, Carris has stated that it is still determining responsibilities and has already dismissed the Director of Electric Mode Maintenance.
Political Pressure Mounts
On Tuesday, Socialist councilors in the Lisbon Municipal Council demanded the resignation of Carris's administration, citing the report's grave conclusions. The current administration, led by Pedro Bogas, took office in 2022 and is set to end its term this year, but Moedas's decision accelerates their departure amid growing scrutiny.
