Lisbon's Municipal Assembly has voted to recommend the construction of a mosque in the Martim Moniz - Alameda axis, following consultations with Islamic communities. The proposal saw opposition from PSD, IL, PPM, CDS-PP, and Chega, while BE, Livre, PEV, PCP, PS, PAN, and two unaffiliated deputies from Cidadãos Por Lisboa supported it.
Key Decisions
- The assembly urged the city council to engage with Islamic religious entities to realize the mosque project in the specified area.
- The recommendation also includes initiatives to promote integration and respect for cultural and religious diversity.
Background
This recommendation stems from a joint report by Lisbon's Municipal Assembly committees on Urban Planning and Human and Social Rights, which evaluated the potential construction of a new mosque in Mouraria. The project, initially approved in 2012, has seen little progress, leading to the emergence of informal worship spaces lacking safety conditions.
Opposition and Support
- CDS-PP voted against the mosque but supported programs for Muslim community integration.
- The proposal also calls for updates to residents and local parishes on the mosque's development process.
Urban Development
Additionally, the assembly recommended considering the construction of the Praça da Mouraria as an urban solution for the Rua da Palma and Rua do Benformoso areas, regardless of the religious facility's location.
