The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing highlighted on Tuesday that the location for Lisbon's new airport is now "absolutely defined and crystallized," allowing for territorial planning with a structural vision. Speaking at the opening of the Portuguese Road and Railway Congress in Lisbon, Miguel Pinto Luz emphasized the importance of integrating public policies in health, justice, and social areas when designing infrastructure to avoid exacerbating territorial imbalances and injustices.
The government has prioritized territorial justice, considering this vision in investments made during the legislative term. This approach is evident in the investment in the Metropolitan Area and Lisbon, including the LuĂs Vaz de Camões Airport, whose location is now firmly established, enabling territorial definition. Projects like the Cidades Tejo park, the reinforcement of A12 and A13 highways, the South Tagus Metro, and the third Tagus crossing are part of this strategy, alongside an infrastructural vision for the people moving to this area.
Pinto Luz warned against creating "ghettos with large infrastructures" that lack impact without a comprehensive vision. Similarly, in High-Speed Rail, efforts are being made to integrate education, linking with institutes and universities, and investing in logistical centers to ensure high-speed projects are not imposed on unprepared territories.
On May 14, 2024, the government approved the construction of the new Lisbon region airport at the Campo de Tiro in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).
