The Medical Council (OM) has requested clarifications from the Santa Maria Local Health Unit (ULS) in Lisbon regarding a dermatologist who allegedly earned €400,000 over 10 additional Saturdays in 2024.
Carlos Cortes, the head of the OM, revealed that the council became aware of the situation through a television report and immediately sought explanations from the hospital. The case, initially reported by CNN Portugal, involves the dermatologist performing additional work, including removing benign lesions from his parents on one of these days.
Key Points:
- The OM emphasizes the importance of concrete facts before any disciplinary action can be considered.
- The Inspectorate-General for Health Activities (IGAS) has launched an investigation into additional surgical activities across the country, including at Santa Maria Hospital.
- The OM has not received any formal complaints related to similar cases.
Investigation Underway: IGAS has initiated an inquiry into the additional surgical activities within the National Health Service (SNS), focusing on the Dermatology Service at Santa Maria Hospital from 2021 to the present. This includes an audit of patient classification into homogeneous diagnostic groups (GDH).
The controversy centers around the Integrated Management System for Surgical Inpatients (SIGIC), designed to reduce waiting lists by allowing surgeries outside regular hours.
