In the aftermath of the electoral results, the PAN (People-Animals-Nature) party is witnessing a wave of resignations. Pedro Fidalgo Marques, the head of the list for the European elections, stepped down from the permanent political commission this Saturday. This move adds to the two resignations reported earlier this week, highlighting the ongoing dissent under the leadership of Inês Sousa Real.
Despite securing Sousa Real's re-election to Parliament, the PAN failed to elect a deputy in Porto, missing the chance to form a parliamentary group. Sousa Real remains optimistic, emphasizing the need for "unity" and expressing confidence in the party's electoral growth.
Fidalgo Marques, also the leader of the Oeiras council, clarified that his resignation aims to "spark reflection within the PAN" and is "not an attack on anyone." He will continue his role in the party's national political commission.
The resignations of Anabela Castro and Nuno Pires, members of the PAN's national political commission, on election day, further underscore the challenges Sousa Real faces. These departures join a series of exits, including that of former leader André Silva, marking a turbulent period for the party.
Following a national political commission meeting, Sousa Real outlined the party's priority to strengthen its "commitment to the Portuguese." She acknowledged the upcoming local elections as a call for the PAN to embrace "a period of unity, renewal, and closeness to citizens."
Sousa Real remains confident in the party's potential for growth, stating, "People want to see their quality of life improve, and the PAN will be here to make that difference." She also called for stability and urged the AD (Democratic Alliance) to engage more in dialogue, warning against "anti-democratic populisms."
