Summary:

  • Portugal extends Alert Status until August 13 to combat wildfires amid rising temperatures.

  • Strict prohibitions include accessing forest areas and conducting burnings to reduce fire risks.

  • Government announces support for those affected by the wildfires, emphasizing solidarity with victims.

The Portuguese government has decided to extend the Alert Status until next Wednesday, August 13, in response to the ongoing wildfire crisis. This announcement was made during a press conference by the Ministers of the Presidency and Internal Administration.

"We have decided to renew the Alert Status until August 13," stated Minister Maria Lúcia Amaral, noting that it will remain under the same terms as the declaration that came into effect last Saturday and was set to expire today.

This decision was based on the observation that "the Alert Status has contributed to a reduction in the number of ignitions" and due to the forecast of worsening climatic conditions in the coming days.

Prohibited Activities

To mitigate the increased risk of wildfires, the following activities are strictly prohibited:

  • Accessing, moving through, or staying inside forest areas as defined in the Municipal Plans for Defense of the Forest Against Fires, including forest paths, rural roads, and other crossing routes.
  • Conducting burnings and fires of leftover materials from exploitation, with all issued authorizations being suspended.
  • Performing work in forest areas using machinery, except when necessary for firefighting operations.
  • Working in rural areas with blade or metal disc brush cutters, brush cutters, shredders, and machines with blades or front shovels.
  • Using fireworks or any other pyrotechnic materials, with all issued authorizations for such use being suspended.
