Six people lost their lives early Saturday morning following a head-on collision between two vehicles near the village of Casével, in Castro Verde. The accident has led to the complete closure of the IP2 highway in both directions, which remains in effect.
According to sources from the District Center for Relief Operations (CDOS) of Beja, the collision occurred at kilometer 387 of the IP2. One of the vehicles, carrying five occupants, caught fire after the crash.
"The fire from the vehicle spread to the surrounding brush, requiring specialized firefighting equipment, and has since been extinguished," added the source.
The incident prompted a massive response from emergency services, with 34 operatives and 16 vehicles from Civil Protection and fire departments dispatched to the scene. The alert was received at 02:06, as reported by the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
"The IP2 remains entirely closed," confirmed the CDOS of Beja source.
